After breakfast, check-out and depart for Istanbul. On route visit Iznik/Nicea, a little town set beside a picturesque lake, historically famous for hosting the First Ecumenical Council at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. The town has witnessed many civilizations, which have left their marks on every corner. It was the center of tile production in the 16th century, producing tiles for famous architectural landmarks. The tour will visit the historical city walls and gates and continue to the Iznik Museum and the Iznik Foundation, an organization reviving the tradition of the Turkish tile “Cini” (www.iznikvakfi.org). After lunch, drive to Istanbul.

Dinner at hotel and overnight in Istanbul.

After breakfast, we will visit Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi Tombs, the founders of the Ottoman Empire, and continue with the beautiful Green Mosque and Tomb. Lunch will be taken at a famous restaurant, Bursa Iskender Kebap. After lunch, visit Uluumay Ottoman Folk Dresses and Handicrafts Museum. Dinner will be taken at the hotel. After dinner, guests will view a Karagoz shadow puppet theater play at the Karagoz House. Overnight in Bursa.

Check out and depart to visit Homer’s Troy. Drive along the Marmara Sea to Bursa, the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. Lunch will be taken on route at a local restaurant. Bursa is rich in religious monuments, mosques and tombs, as well as traditional Turkish baths (the

Hamam). It was a center for Ottoman silks, a tradition still enduring, as well as home to the famous “Turkish towel”. Bursa is also the hometown of the famous Traditional Turkish shadow theatre, Karagoz. In Bursa, we will visit the Great Mosque and Koza Han, home of the silk trade. Dinner and overnight in Bursa.



Cultural Tours Fall 2009 – Istanbul-Edirne–Canakkale

After breakfast, check out and depart via private bus to Edirne, the second capital of the Ottoman Empire. Our walking tour will include masterpieces of Turkish architecture, the Selimiye Mosque and Sultan II. Bayezid Health Museum, was recognized as the best European Museum in 2004 by the European Union. This historical health complex is best known for using alternative medicine, such as the use of music for therapeutic purposes. A private musical performance will introduce the “Ney,” a traditional Turkish music instrument. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant in Edirne featuring traditional local dishes. Continue on to Canakkale. We will visit the Anzac Cove, 57th Infantry Regiment Cemetery and Memorial, Chunuk Bair, Çanakkale Martyrs Memorial and the Lone Pine Cemetery & Memorial.

After breakfast, we will visit the Sokullu Mehmet Pasa Mosque in Kadirga. A private reciting of the “Mevlit,” a Turkish versed hymn that praises the Prophet Mohammed, will be performed by the clergy of the mosque.

We will continue our tour to the Surp Hiresdagabad Armenian Church, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate at the Fener & Balat districts. Then, we will continue with the Jewish Museum in Karaköy and the Neva Shalom Synagogue in Şişhane.

Lunch will be hosted by the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art.

In the afternoon, we will visit the Spice Market [17th Century

] introduce the Turkish cuisine, eating culture and the use of spices. An excursion to Istinye Park Mall allows some free time to experience this latest addition to Istanbul’s urban lifestyle.

Dinner at Naz Turkish Cuisine Restaurant. A private performance of Turkish Classical Music called “Fasil” will accompany the tastes of authentic Turkish cuisine.

After breakfast, depart for a full day Istanbul tour. Our tour will start a presentation on exquisite textiles, carpets, kilims and other weavings follows at the renowned Mehmet Çetinkaya Gallery.

We will then visit the Grand Bazaar [

15th Century]. Continue with the Istanbul Archeological Museum and the Topkapi Palace. On a finger of land at the confluence of the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara stands the Topkapi Palace, that maze of buildings which was the focal point of the Ottoman Empire between the 15th and 19th centuries in these opulent surroundings, the sultans and their court lived and governed. During the tour, lunch will be served at Konyali Restaurant, which is located inside the Palace overlooking the marvelous Bosphorus. In the afternoon, we will visit the Dolmabahce Palace [19th Century], the later residence and seat of government of the Ottoman dynasty.

After breakfast, depart hotel to meet the Turkish Cultural Foundation’s Istanbul team at their office. Seminar/discussion on Turkey’s current issues. View “Armaggan” exhibition of contemporary designs inspired by Turkish cultural heritage.

Depart TCF offices for a full day tour of Istanbul. Istanbul embraces two continents, one arm reaching out to Asia, the other to Europe. In the city’s heart, the Bosphorus Strait, connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and creates the famous Golden Horn. The former capital of three successive empires – Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman – today, Istanbul honors and preserves the legacy of its past while looking forward to its modern future. Visit the Blue Mosque [16th Century], Museum of Turkish & Islamic Arts [Artifacts date back to the 9th Century], the Hippodrome [3rd Century]and Hagia Sophia [6th Century]. Lunch will be served at Ayasofya Konaklari. In Uskudar, a historical district of the Asian side of Istanbul, we visit the studio of Hikmet Barutcugil, a renowned Turkish artist and observe a demonstration of the Turkish traditional fine art of “Ebru” (Paper Marbling).

 

Dinner will be hosted by the Bahçeşehir University at the Beşiktaş Campus. Overnight in Istanbul.
